The leaves of an African Mask are very eye-catching; dark, almost black, color with white green veins, make them very unique. The leaves are glossy long pointed and heart-shaped. African Masks need care and patience but it is worth it! They currently are an endangered species, so having one and propagating it is a nice way to keep this plant thriving outside of its native home.

The Dirt

Native to Southeast Asia, Philippines Islands. The name Kris was given to this plant since the leaves resembled a wavy Filipino dagger called Kris or Kalis. The genus name Alocasia is derived from the Greek word, kolokasia, which means lotus. Sanderiana refers to a British nurseryman named Henry Fredrick Conrad Sander. Though many know the plant by, African Mask. This plant prefers a tight fit in their pot so repotting often is not necessary. In their native habitat, they can grow to be 6ft but will typically be 3ft indoors at home.

This plant likes most rooms with windows facing west or east. You could place it in a spot away from a very sunny window – as light intensity goes down quick as you move away from the light source.

Water one a week. Before watering, feel the soil, top layer should be dry, if not dry wait a day or two. If the soil still is wet you risk giving the plant too much water, you don’t want it to rot.

Only when ingested it may cause mild oral and gastrointestinal upsetness. Keep out of reach from pets and small children.

Care Tips

In low light, the plants leaves will get smaller and will stop growing

This plant enjoys humidity so purchasing a humidifier is a good idea or mist the leaves once a week, but not at night

Small brown tips on the leaves could indicate dry air

Remove dust once a month, with a wet sponge, to keep the leaves clean in order to help with the photosynthesis process

If overwatered the leaves can turn yellow and should be removed
