The Dirt

Native to Southeast Asia. The genus name Alocasia is derived from the Greek word, kolokasia, which means lotus. Alocasia plants do not like to sit in constant moist or soggy soil. Soil aeration is key! And using moss is helpful. It is best to water your Alocasia thoroughly/deeply but not frequently. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Rotate plant so that all angles can receive sun.

Part Sun

This plant likes most rooms with windows facing west or east. You could place it in a spot away from a very sunny window – as light intensity goes down quick as you move away from the light source.

Medium

Water once a week. Before watering, feel the soil, top layer should be dry, if not dry wait a day or two. If the soil still is wet you risk giving the plant too much water, you don’t want it to rot.

Pet Toxic

Only when ingested it may cause mild oral and gastrointestinal upsetness. Keep out of reach from pets and small children.

Care Tips

In low light, the plants leaves will get smaller and will stop growing

If overwatered, the leaves might get yellow, and should be removed if so. Also, the basal root can rot

This plant enjoys humidity so purchasing a humidifier is a good idea or mist the leaves once a week, but not at night

Small brown tips on the leaves could indicate dry air

Too much sun can burn the leaves

Keep away from an air conditioner or heater
